CSGO: 5 Steps to Supercharge Your Practice

Step 1: Amazing Aim

Since aiming is the most inconsistent part of anyone’s game, it is important to train frequently.

  • Browse community servers, and select a map with an “aim_” prefix (e.g. aim_redline)
  • Use the same weapons you’ll use in competitive (i.e. AK47 or M4A1)
  • Aim exclusively for the head while tapping out 1-click AK shots and 2-click M4 shots
  • Don’t worry about your death count! Focus on aiming and movement
  • Stay mobile to practice peeking, but always come to a complete stop before shooting
  • Switch sides after each map change to keep from getting too comfortable
  • Don’t use the AK for every map! Switch to the M4 at least every other map
  • Have fun! Lower the game volume, pull up the steam browser, and play some music
Step 2: Super Spray

Spray control is more difficult in CS:GO than in previous versions. However, once mastered, it can greatly increase your deadliness at close and medium range.

  • Download and play the training_aim_csgo workshop map with no bots
  • If stuck under ground, enter “sv_cheats 1” and “noclip” in the console to get out
  • Select burst training, change size to head, and change shots to 100 on the settings panel
  • Select an AK and an M4 from the weapons panel. Be sure to use both!
  • Fire the longest bursts you can consistently land on the target
  • Switch levels after each round of 100 shots
  • Switch weapons after rotating through all 4 levels
  • Toggle “sv_showimpacts” between 1 and 0 in the console to better view burst patterns

The keys to success with this practice are using both rifles (since they have significantly different spray patterns) and not relying on “sv_showimpacts” (because it makes grouping shots much easier).

Step 3: Awesome AWP

AWP training is similar to aim training, but it requires a unique server and different weapon handling.

  • Browse community servers, and select a map with an “awp_” prefix (e.g. awp_pro)
  • Don’t worry about your death count! Focus on aiming and movement
  • Stay mobile to practice peeking, but always come to a complete stop before shooting
  • Don’t move around while scoped in! Only scope when holding an angle or shooting
  • Don’t scope to the second level except when truly necessary as it limits visibility
  • Switch to secondary then back to primary to un-scope the AWP from first-level zoom
  • Switch sides after each map change to keep from getting too comfortable
  • Have fun! Lower the game volume, pull up the steam browser, and play some music
Step 4: Perfect Pistol

Winning the pistol round on each side can give your team a significant advantage. To do this consistently you must be intimately familiar with pistols.

  • Download and play a deathmatch on the fy_iceworld workshop map with expert bots
  • Enter “cl_dm_buyrandomweapons 0” in the console to disable random weapons
  • Buy the pistol or pistols you plan to most commonly use in competitive play
  • Aim exclusively for the head while carefully controlling your rate of fire
  • Don’t worry about dying. Just focus on aiming and movement
  • Stay mobile to practice peeking, but always come to a complete stop before shooting
  • Switch sides after each round to play with both starting pistols
  • Play a minimum of one round with each pistol you select!

To get the most out of this practice you should focus on reducing the number of shots you take to put down an enemy while simultaneously improving your reaction time.

Step 5: Master Movement

In this training session you will be putting together most of the elements of your game to practice them in a safe environment. Try to stay focused and mute any trolls that start ranting on voice chat.

  • Find a map, with “ffa” as a keyword, that is running a competitive map (e.g. de_dust2)
  • Use the same weapons you’ll use in competitive (i.e. AK47 or M4A1)
  • Aim exclusively for the head while tapping or bursting depending on the range
  • Don’t worry about your death count! Focus on movement, awareness, and aiming
  • Rotate around the map, check all corners, and stop before shooting
  • Practice entering and holding sites with and without the help of radar
  • Don’t use the AK for every round! Switch to the M4 at least every other round
  • Have fun! Lower the game volume, pull up the steam browser, and play some music
